Bat Feces Disease

While it is known that rodents like mice and rats can transmit disease, people have very little knowledge when it comes to the diseases that bats bring with them. The disease that bats are known for is known as Histoplasmosis. It is the most common disease that is transmitted by bat feces. It happens when the spores of the feces are breathed in and then transmitted. The disease can cause some serious respiratory systems which can be even fatal when left untreated. These symptoms can include, but are not limited to the following:

If you have a bat infestation, do not hesitate to contact the licensed and insured exterminators from Bat Control.

· Fever

· Headache

· Dry cough/cough with blood in chronic phase

· Chills

· Muscle aches

· Chest discomfort

· Pain in the joints

These symptoms are not only acquired by bats but can very well be caused by bird poop as well. These spores become dangerous after they become airborne such as after demolition or large-scale cleanup treatments. Therefore, it is very important that you know how to identify bat poop or commonly known as bat guano. Bat guano can be very difficult to remove and might need some professional help to have it removed fully so as not to take chances. Bat guano can be recognized as being quite similar to rat droppings mainly due to the black colour, but looking closer, you will see that it has some shiny particles. It might be a curious sight to see but these are actually the digested particles of bugs’ wings that the bat had eaten before.

If you do recognize bat feces and want to remove them on your own then it is highly recommended to wear a face mask, gloves, and a sealable plastic bag handy with you at all times. Make sure to be careful not to sweep or vacuum the bat droppings in order to avoid airborne particles circulating throughout the space. The important part of cleaning bat feces is making them dam enough to be picked up by a wet towel, paper towel, or a sturdy napkin. You can dampen these feces with a water sprayer or with a steamer to make them easier to pick up. To disinfect the surface where the feces were on, you can use a water-bleach solution which consists of 9 parts water to 1 part bleach. Spray it on the surface and leave it the solution there for 10 minutes before rinsing and wiping it off. It is very important that the space is well-ventilated to avoid breathing in any spores that can cause disease and harm.

If there is a large quantity of feces present, then it is highly recommended to have it done by professionals that have the tools and the equipment to ensure a safe and quick cleanup.
